Children's Health and Safety - Second-Hand Smoke

Smoke-Free Home and Car

Secondhand smoke is the mix of smoke given off by the cigarette and the smoke exhaled by the smoker. This smoke contains over 4,000, several of which are suspected to cause cancer in humans.

Second hand smoke can be just as hazardous to your health as smoking a cigarette.

Children who breathe in second hand smoke are more likely to:

  • Get chronic bronchitis and pneumonia
  • Have more ear infections
  • Develop asthma
  • Wheeze and cough

A child exposed to any form of cigarette smoke before or after birth is at a higher risk for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

Protect Your Child
  • Do not smoke around your children
  • Do not let others smoke around your children
  • Do not smoke in your house or in your car
  • Choose smoke-free daycare centers

Use your head, it's not enough to:

  • Move to another room
  • Open a window
  • Blow the smoke away
  • Use air fresheners
